Why Is My Toilet Not Flushing? Common Causes and How to Fix It

Why Is My Toilet Not Flushing? Common Causes and How to Fix It

A toilet that won't flush properly is one of the most frustrating plumbing problems a homeowner can face — especially when it happens unexpectedly. The good news is that most causes are straightforward to diagnose, and many can be fixed quickly by a local plumber. This guide explains the most common reasons a toilet stops flushing and what to do about each one.

The 6 Most Common Reasons a Toilet Won't Flush

1. A Blocked Toilet Trap or Soil Pipe

The most common cause of a toilet not flushing is a blockage in the toilet trap — the curved section of pipe directly below the pan — or in the soil pipe leading away from the toilet. Blockages are usually caused by too much toilet paper, wet wipes (even "flushable" ones), sanitary products, or foreign objects such as cotton buds. If water fills the bowl when you flush and drains very slowly or not at all, a blockage is almost certainly the cause.

What to do: Do not keep flushing — this risks overflowing the bowl. Call a plumber to clear the blockage using specialist rods or a drain auger. Our blocked toilet service covers all of Midlothian with same-day attendance.

2. A Faulty Flush Valve or Syphon

Inside your toilet cistern, a flush valve (or syphon on older cisterns) releases the water when you press the handle. Over time, the rubber diaphragm, flap valve or seals inside the mechanism wear out. The result is a weak flush, a handle that moves but does nothing, or water continuously running into the bowl.

Signs: Handle feels loose, flush sounds weak, cistern doesn't refill fully, or water runs continuously.

What to do: A plumber can replace the internal cistern mechanism on the same visit. It is a quick, affordable repair and it restores full flush power immediately.

3. Low Water Level in the Cistern

Your cistern needs to fill to the correct level to provide a powerful enough flush. If the float valve is set too low, or if the fill valve is failing, the cistern won't hold enough water and every flush will be weak. You can check this by lifting the cistern lid — the water level should be about 2–3 cm below the overflow pipe.

What to do: Adjust the float arm if your cistern has one, or call a plumber to replace the fill valve. This is a five-minute repair for an experienced plumber.

4. A Blocked Rim Jet

Water enters the toilet bowl through small holes or jets around the underside of the rim. Over time, these can become blocked with limescale, especially in areas with moderate to hard water. Blocked rim jets produce a weak, uneven flush and the water doesn't swirl around the bowl properly.

Signs: Flush is weak even though the cistern fills fully, water trickles into one side of the bowl rather than swirling evenly.

What to do: A plumber can descale the rim jets. In severe cases, replacement of the pan may be more cost-effective.

5. A Sewer-Level Blockage

If your toilet is slow to flush and other drains in your home — bath, basin, kitchen sink — are also draining slowly or gurgling, the blockage is not in the toilet itself but further down in the shared sewer or drain run. This type of blockage requires specialist drain jetting equipment to clear.

Signs: Multiple fixtures are slow or backing up simultaneously; gurgling sounds from drains when flushing.

What to do: Call a drainage specialist. Our drainage jetting service clears shared sewer blockages completely, with a camera inspection available to confirm the line is clear.

6. A Cracked or Damaged Cistern

Less common but worth checking — if the cistern itself is cracked or the seal between the cistern and the pan has failed, water leaks away before the flush happens. You may notice water on the floor behind the toilet, or the cistern never seems to hold water.

What to do: A plumber can inspect, replace the seal, or fit a new cistern as required.

When Should You Call a Plumber?

Call a plumber immediately if:

  • The toilet bowl is overflowing or at risk of overflowing
  • Multiple drains are blocked simultaneously
  • The toilet has been completely non-functional for more than a few hours
  • You can see sewage backing up

For less urgent faults — weak flush, slow drain, running cistern — we still recommend getting it checked within a day or two. These problems almost always worsen over time and can lead to water damage or a complete blockage.
