How to Check Your Water Meter for a Leak
This is the simplest and most reliable self-check you can do. Your water meter is usually located in a small plastic box in the pavement outside your property, or occasionally inside near where the supply pipe enters the building.
- Turn off all water-using appliances — washing machines, dishwashers, taps, toilets — and ensure no one uses water for the test period.
- Note the exact reading on the meter dial, including the smaller indicator dials or digital display. Photograph it.
- Do not use any water for 2 hours (overnight is ideal).
- Check the meter reading again. If the number has changed, water is flowing somewhere it should not be.
If you can see the leak indicator dial (a small red triangle or spinning disc on some meters) moving with all outlets closed, that confirms an active leak.
